Before you hire a Contractor

As a professional contractor I stand behind my work.  I believe you should always get more than one estimate before you make your decision.  Here are a few things you should consider when hiring any contactor.

Ask for referrals

Get referrals from sources you trust, like friends and family members, neighbours or co-workers. You can also ask your local paint store for referrals.

Interview Your Potential Contractors

Before you hire any contractor, ask the following questions:

  • How long have you been in business?
  • Do you subcontract your work or perform it yourself?
  • Are you insured? (All workers should be insured for injury and liability.)

Get References

Ask for at least three references from past customers—and be sure to follow up with each reference personally. A good contractor will have satisfied customers who will be happy to recommend their services.

Ask for a Written Estimate

Request estimates, in writing, from at least three contractors. Be sure to meet at the location you want painted, so you can review the scope of the work together. The more specific and clear you are about what you want, the more precise the estimate will be.

  • Specify which surfaces you want painted (walls, trim, ceilings, etc.
  • Communicate exactly what colours and sheens you want the painter to use—and be sure they're included in the written estimate.
  • Keep in mind that some products perform better than others. Ask your contractor what products they use.
  • Be wary of contractors who bid too high or too low.

Think Beyond the Price

There's more to hiring the right painter than price. Before making a final decision, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Does the painter project a sense of professionalism and experience?
  • Is he or she courteous and business-like?
  • Does the painter return phone calls and provide estimates in a timely manner?
  • Does he or she arrive on time for appointments?

Review the Contract

Take time to review your contract carefully and make sure it includes the following elements:

  • Specific details about what is being painted (house, trim, shutters, etc.) and what's being excluded
  • What exact primers, paints, and sheens will be used on each surface
  • How many coats of paint will be applied
  • Preparation (protecting furniture, plants, patios, etc.)
  • Clean-up procedures
  • When and how the contractor will be paid.  Be leary of a contractor that wants to be paid before they've started the job.  Partial payments based on work completed is acceptable industry practice.
  • Guarantees and warranties (what exactly is covered?)
